Birger Kaipiainen, designed for Arabia in 1987, numbered 633/3000.
“VIOLA – A PIECE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIOLET SEA
has been immortalized in honour of the unique artist, Professor Birger Kaipiainen. He gave ceramic art its own stylistic direction. Mysterious, fairytale-like stories. Strong colours, rich luxuriance full of imagination.
This pansy bowl is a tribute to the artist’s most famous work, the monumental Orvokkimeri (Sea of Violets), which was completed in 1967 for the Montreal World's Fair. There, visitors queued in long lines to see the much-talked-about, enchanting piece.
The pansy bowl is hand-decorated and unique, a one-of-a-kind art object and a collector’s item. Three different-sized bowls together create for the owner their own violet sea, in the spirit of the original work.
The artist worked at the beloved and respected Arabia for nearly 50 years.”
